A qualified denomination of origin is The Priorat DO (in Spanish, Priory) and the second to be obtained, after the Rioja DO. In the region of El Priorat the denomination of origin is in the province of Taragon. With vineyards more suited to hills, the dry Mediterranean climate benefits the wines along with the minerals it gets from the poor, volcanic soil put together with layers of black slate.
Its main white grape varieties are Macabeo, Pedro Ximenez and Garnacha which are all grown on the 1,725 hectares including over 82 wineries and 600 growers. The famous Red wines they produce are garnet-red in colour, aromatic, rich and fleshy. These Red wines are produced mainly from Carignan, but also used are the Grenache, Garnacha Peluda, Cabernet sauvignon, Merlot and Syray.
